Mutable rose
Duration: c. 4'
For choir (sa)
The idea of basing a piece on roses grew from my string quartet Roses for Icarus which was written just before Mutable Rose. There is a particular section of the quartet, just before the end, which feels almost still, floating in the air. I wanted to take the feel of that section and explore it further, using voices and text to infuse it with different colours and warmth.
The text is a collage drawn from writings on roses by Rory Dusoir and George Eliot and a description of Anya Gallacio's artwork Red on Green. Mutable Rose was commissioned by the Boydell Singers and premiered by them with conductor Sheila Frost in March 2005.
